21-year-old, Heroin-Chic, Squatting, Ex-Mormon, DJ spills his guts about growing up! Razorblade Rush squidvicious
Where did you grow up and go to school?
I grew up in Encinitas. I was home-schooled; I’ve never been to public school. My dad was Mormon and weird. He thought the school system was evil. He bought books from Christian organizations or whatever. They were like educational books, I just read those at my house. I didn’t actually do any work. I didn’t have assignments, he just told me to do it.
Did you do it?
A little bit, I read. I’m terrible at math though cause know one really… well I couldn’t teach myself algebra. And I’m not good at English, because I can’t write papers. I never wrote one until this January, it was kind of a big deal. I actually went to school for the first time this January. It freaked me out, but it wasn’t bad.
When did u stop being Mormon?
I was always rebelling when I was a teenager. I think at like 15 or 16 my dad caught me with a bong in my room. It wasn’t mine hahahahahahahaha (Squid giggles after things he says). One time I tried to smoke weed in my room and my step mom smelt it, the I just got a long lecture. My dad knew I drank and smoked weed and shit, but he didn’t approve of it. One time I came home at like four in the morning when I was on mushrooms and he was waiting for me. He thought I was sober, I told him I went to the beach to think about stuff and he believed it. It was unreal the entire time I’m like seeing shit around his head.
Have you lived anywhere other than San Diego?
I was born in Lompoc. I lived there till I was three. It’s up near Santa Barbara, the only thing there is a prison. I move to Costa Rica when I was 17 because my dad moved there. He thought America was evil. He had a kid their so he’s legal. I lived there for 3 months till I was 18.
You just left?
My family went back to San Diego for a family trip. My dad didn’t know I was gunna stay. I might have told him before we left. I think, I don’t really remember. I know he was super surprised when I stayed. I ended up moving into a friend’s garage for a few months until I could save up some money to get my own place.
What do you think your life would be like if you stayed down there?
I was pretty bored down there. I didn’t really do anything down there. Except one time my dad was staying in the capital San Jose. I took the car and went to the tourist town Tamarindo. I got drunk and bought coke from some dude from Arizona. I hung out with him all night, I’m still not sure why. Then I tried to drive home, I got on the wrong road and got the car stuck in a river. I had to walk for hours to find help. I found a group of people at like 6 in the morning. I tried to speak Spanish to them. After about five minutes I think they kind of understood me. They walked always back to my car with me. There must have been like 7 of them, they pushed the car out while I steered. My parents still don’t know about that.
Where do you live now?
I’m squatting right now. I was living on a friends couch until she kicked me out. We stopped getting along plus she was always yelling at me for getting drunk and puking on the floor. At the time I was working at American Apparel, they fired me a few weeks ago. Anyways, one of the girls that I worked with said I could move into to her house. She was squatting at a house in Golden Hill (outside downtown San Diego). We got kicked out of that one after a few months. But we found another foreclosed place, broken in and changed the locks. That’s where I live now. We don’t have any furniture though and the girl I lived with moved out. Some other squatters moved in though. Right now there’s some dude who listens to acid trip music all day living on a blow up mattress in the living room.
So do you hang out there or is it sketchy?
What we’re doing isn’t illegal and we pay the utilities. But still no one hangs out here. People get creeped out, we have no blinds or furniture, its cold, and we have no dishes. I think people think its pretty weird. All that’s in my room is clothes and a mattress, it’s not even my mattress I found it but it looked clean, so I started using it. The cool thing is it randomly had a sound proof garage where I can play my music as loud as I want. All that was in the sound proof room when we moved in was a mattress so we call it the rape chamber. But it’s pretty sick, I probably couldn’t even rent a house with a music room if I wanted.
When did you get into music?
I’ve always liked music. I got more into it when I was 14 or 15. I started listening to a lot of punk music like the Clash, from there I got into Crass. I fucking love Crass.
What bands do you like right now?
I’ve been listening to Best Coast a lot. They’re playing tonight I might go see em. The Smith Westerns are really good; I saw them in Costa (Mesa) at Detroit bar with Hunx and Punx, and Girls. It was really good. The crowd sucked though everyone thought they were super cool, cause they’re rich Orange County kids.
How is what you listen to different or similar to what you spin?
I usually don’t play as much of the indie rock shit that I listen to. I play mostly indie dance stuff. Remixes and shit. I just play songs that I like.
What type of crowd do you like to play for?
Just have a bunch of people thrashing around to Welcome to Jungle!
What’s thrashing?
Thrashing is just jumping around and shit…super hard.
What are some things you’d like to change in the DJ scene?
A lot of times at DJ stuff it’s not about the music. People go just to be cool and be seen at some party, where a DJ they never heard of is playing. I like live shows a lot better, people actually go to see the band. Not to be cool, and get their picture taken. All these fucking photographers walking around taking pictures for the Internet, there’s a new one every week. I know the clubs pay them (photographers) but its not about being seen its about the music. I guess more people come if there’s a photographer cause its cooler.
Also a lot of DJ’s act-like their playing with knobs the whole time, but they’re not actually doing anything. Maybe you touch some knobs for a little bit or for certain part of a song. But people over do it to try and look cool. They act like they’re doing stuff, but really there not doing shit most of the time.
Where do you like to play?
Where ever people are partying the hardest. A lot of places in San Diego suck, people don’t get that into it. In San Francisco people thrash around. That’s what I like about up there, people just don’t give a fuck!
Why do you DJ if you think the people who come are so wack?
Not all of them are wack some of them are my friends. I just want to hear my music. Wherever I am I always demand to play what I want to hear. Even if I’m at some random house I just take the Ipod and put on what I want to hear. I think that’s why I got into DJing. I just wanted to listen to my music. I hope by playing what I like and not what is hot or trendy, I can attract the right group of people. And by the right people, I mean people; who actually listen to music, go to shows and support a small band that’s come across the country to play for you. Those people need a place to party, when there’s nothing going on and I want to make a place for those types of people.
